How to Amend Form 1040-NR to Form 1040

Online · Written guide Content date 1 min read

If a taxpayer filed Form 1040-NR but should have filed Form 1040, you'll need to submit an amended Form 1040. In Form 1040-X, the nonresident return's information will be entered in the Original column.

Tax Processors Plus Online does not support deactivating a return that has been transmitted, nor changing the SSN on an accepted return for the purpose of creating a new return with the same SSN, therefore if you filed the original Form 1040-NR you won't be able to amend it to change it to Form 1040.

On the other hand, if you're amending a return created by someone else or in a different software, you can prepare and file the amended return in Tax Processors Plus Online. See the instructions below for how to amend a return created by someone else, as well as determining the source of the amounts in the Form 1040-X Original Column.
