How to Amend Form 1040 to Form 1040-NR

Desktop · Written guide Content date 1 min read

If a taxpayer filed Form 1040 but should have filed Form 1040-NR, you'll need to submit an amended Form 1040-NR. In Form 1040-X, the resident return's information will be entered in the Original column.

If you prepared Form 1040 in Tax Processors Plus Desktop, you'll need to delete it so that you can create Form 1040-NR. Before deleting it, print the entire return for reference purposes.

Here are the steps to follow:

1. Have a printed copy of Form 1040 including all supporting forms, schedules, and worksheets for reference.

2. Remove Form 1040 if you completed it in Tax Processors Plus Desktop.

3. Prepare Form 1040-NR.

4. Once you've finished entering all the information into the return, start the amended return. You'll be asked if you want to pull data to the Original column. Answer No to populate the Correct column with the current data in the return.

5. In the Form 1040-X Menu, fill in the Original column with the appropriate amounts from Form 1040. See here for information on where each menu line in the Original column is sourced from Form 1040.

6. If you're electronically filing the amended Form 1040-NR, be sure to mark it for e-file in the Form 1040-X Menu.
